im a aspiring animator/graphic designer... but i am very drawn to video games. I want to branch out and do something in game devolpment but is it worth the risk? — Asked by troke

Um, I’ll be honest here – I’m not in any real position to say this as I’m not directly involved in that part of the industry. If you have an interest… actually, that’s not the word I’m looking for. If you have a passion for video games, then go for it! If it’s something you can be truly happy with, then yes, it is worth the risk.

Let me point you to a few really great websites that will help get the ball rolling. There are members who are in the industry and honestly these sites will be able to provide more insight then I would ever be capable of:

ConceptArt.org

Go, join, and get practicing. Honestly if you’ve ever seen a giant gallery of Guild Wars concept art, I’m almost certain it ended up linking to this place. They even list Industry jobs to help you gauge what to work on in your portfolio.

We Cook Art

Randis Albion has done work for film, television and games. If found this community through him and it’s really quite excellent.

CG Society

The crème de la crème. With the tutorials, books and workshops available – you honestly can’t go wrong with this website (even if it’s just finding inspiration). As well as job listings as well.

If I can try to offer anything, video game concept artwork seems to have the same underlining principles as other concept artwork fields:

Never stop practicing and never be satisfied.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I better shut up and take my own advice.
